How to organize your TBR list without making it a chore

A photograph from a bookshop, a recommendation buried in a message, three novels bought and never opened: a to-be-read list soon spills beyond the bookshelf. When you finally have time to choose, it can be hard to know where to look.

Gather the scattered ideas before looking for the perfect filing system. A title and author are enough. You could also note who recommended it. “The book Paul mentioned at dinner” may bring back your interest more readily than the publisher’s description.

As you go, distinguish books you own from those you want to borrow or buy. It saves you searching the house for a novel that exists only in a screenshot.

A small selection for right now

A long list keeps your ideas safe, but it may not help much on a tired evening. Pull out three or four books you genuinely want to read soon. Leave the others somewhere you can return to, without setting deadlines.

A library loan might make the shortlist because its return date is approaching. A recommendation you feel less excited about can wait. Buying a book two years ago does not require you to read it before everything else.

When choosing, read a few opening pages. You expected to want travel writing but a mystery has caught your attention instead? Let the shortlist change. It is there to make choosing easier.

You do not need to repeat the exercise every week. Come back when the list stops helping or its titles no longer reflect what you want to read. Remove duplicates and books that no longer appeal.

If you enjoy sorting, a few lists can help: books to borrow, books for a holiday, books recommended by friends. Stop when you can find what you need. Another category can always wait.

Once the ideas are gathered, choosing your next book becomes a question of timing: today’s choice need not be the oldest title on the list.
